Getting Out of Your Car with an Electric Bike
Many of us spend far too much of our lives stuck in traffic. Who likes being stuck in your car, behind a long line of other cars, on your way to and from work? Perhaps you have thought about biking instead of driving your car, but you’re just not in good enough shape to go as far as you need to go, or you don’t want to get to work with sweat stains on your clothes. If so, Sanyo has the answer for you: The Eneloop electric bike.
This bike is a pretty smooth operator; in fact, it just won an innovation award in the Eco-Design and Sustainable Technology category at the 2010 Consumer Electronics Show. It seamlessly integrates the assist provided by the electric motor, so you just have to pedal faster to go faster. You can go 35 to 46 miles (depending on the terrain and your weight) on a single charge of the removable rechargeable battery, and it even has hybrid car style recharging when you brake. The battery charges in 3.5 hours, quick enough so that you can easily charge it up while you are at work so that you will have a full charge for your ride home. So, you can turn your commute into a bike commute without breaking a sweat!
Of course, this convenience does come at a price: $2,300, to be precise. However, if you use this bike when you would normally use your car, it can actually save you money. You can charge up the battery on relatively cheap electricity instead of filling up your tank with gas, and it takes much less energy to power this 48-pound bike instead of the few thousand pounds that your car weighs. If you think about how much you spend every month on gas, that’s about how much you would save by using an electric bike for your commute. So, if you like the idea of saving money with a cool bit of technology, getting out of your car for your daily commute, and helping the planet by burning less gas, perhaps it would be worth your while to give an electric bicycle a look.
