Even though the pundits say that the economy is getting back on track, everyday people are still not seeing it in their daily lives. Of course, after layoffs, many people took matters into their own hands to pick up the pieces of their financial lives. Some took unconventional jobs they would never have imagined doing but it looks like these jobs could well turn out to be a lucrative business career.

In any type of successful business, you need to provide a service or product that people cannot live without. For a lot of people, they cannot live without a clean house. And fortunately for those who supply house cleaning services, it’s not a chore that most people like doing. For many people who were out of jobs in the recession, they turned to cleaning houses to make ends meet. However, now they realize that housekeeping can be a viable career. If you’re working independently, you can choose your clients and your own hours which is a luxury that most people working traditional jobs do not have.

Of course, in order to have this ideal scenario, you need to establish yourself in the cleaning business. While the actual cleaning jobs require physical effort, the marketing aspect of the job requires other skills you might be importing from things you learned in school or previous work experiences. This is the true trick of how to turn a cleaning job into a career – the way you market yourself. Perhaps it’s house cleaning using green friendly products or heavy cleaning for landlords to ready rental properties. Whatever it is, the cleaning industry is a multi billion dollar business to tap into.

While the loss of a job is a very traumatic experience for people to experience, it’s the way you deal with the situations that count. Like the saying goes, if life hands you lemons, you make lemonade. For some, they were able to turn a temporary job situation into a career option with skills they learned elsewhere. Can you put a spin on a job that you can do to achieve the same result?

We must identify what skills and abilities you have that can match your passions with your list of home based jobs.

So what are your skills, or as they say in business school, what are your core competencies? What is it that you do that is above average that can give you an edge over others searching for home based jobs or careers? Are you go with Word, Excel, Publisher, PowerPoint, Access and other software packages? Are you a great strategist, creative, an organizer, hard worker? Make a list of all your strong points. Don’t worry about those areas you are weak in as you can outsource them later (hire someone to do the work for you) or find information online or identify software applications to perform the difficult work.

Matching Passions with Skills

Now develop your list of passions. Lay your lists of skills and passions side-by-side. Are there passions and skills that naturally go together that could help you determine a short list of home based jobs? Do you have a passion for children and strong writing skills that would be advantageous in writing children’s books? Do you have a passion for hunting treasure and a skill for organizing that could lead you to an Internet business of arranging trips for panning gold or searching for gems? Are you a great organizer and good at Microsoft Office products that could lead you to an enjoyable career as an independent executive assistance to corporate staff? Do you have a passion for teaching and have excellent computer skills, which can lead to an exciting career in the expanding industry of online teaching? Match your passions with your skills and create a list of home based jobs that can be pursued. Again, you owe it to yourself and your family to pursue your passions and realize the potential that you have.

Do You Have the Courage?

Once you have a list matching your passion with your skills, you are on the path to an exciting adventure IF you have the courage to take action. Of course, action doesn’t ignore prudence, and you must not quit your current employment before finding your ideal job or work at home opportunity. Start small, learn all you can about the job or industry that your are passionate about. If there is not peace and joy in your musings about the new path you are going to take, it probably is not the right path for you.

Success requires hard work, but even hard work can be joyous if it is in pursuit of your dreams. Help can be found at The Biz Hunter and many other good sites across the Internet.

Working a home based job is somewhat like working a business. Even though you’re still an employee, you’re also working for yourself, and you have to take more responsibility for your actions and results. Many people looking to work from home are excited about the time flexibility and convenience legitimate work from home jobs have to offer, but they may not realize right away the importance of having the right mindset to make it all work. It’s important to remember that there is more to working from home than…well…working from home.

Having a traditional job – one where you go to an office or other type of work location – is really easy. Everything is setup for you: the location, the equipment, the paperwork, the routine, and instructions are given to you by a supervisor on the spot. The employer is taking all of the risk as far as providing all of this for you. If you need help, your supervisor or any of your fellow employees who’ve been working there for a while can help you out and answer your questions – on the spot. There is a certain schedule you work and all you have to worry about is showing up on time, and when your shift ends you leave everything behind you.

The above is likely an oversimplified scenario, but the point is that as a home based employee, you will have to be responsible for managing your own schedule, be resourceful and creative enough to resolve your own problems, and be more accountable for results. In addition, it will be important that you’re persistent enough, at least at first, to continue to bid for work since much of the work is part time, or is available on an irregular basis. Certainly not having a consistent stream of work can be disconcerting at first, so this is where it helps to think more like a business person. Business owners know that there are ups and downs, but they have the tenacity to continue to find business knowing that the work will come. It’s easy to get distracted, so having the discipline to secure enough work, manage your own time, and put forth good effort can be a challenge. This is where having a good mindset- one where you become your own boss and focus on the task at hand – comes into play.

Overall, the characteristics I’ve mentioned above, as well as having a positive attitude and being motivated, will make a difference in being successful working from home . Many of these things are something you may not be use to, particularly if you’ve had a traditional job for a long time. The rewards outweigh the challenges, so once you’ve acquired the right mindset, you’ll be able to effectively balance your personal life with your working life and fully reap the benefits that work from home jobs offer.

Dealers are groups of people deal in transactions involving selling or buying of goods and services. A dealer is involved in buying and selling of cars, furniture, pottery, software, memorabilia and so forth. Dealers also carry out transactions in various mechanisms including retail premises, auction, internet sites, market stall and private sale. There are additional areas of specialization that dealer can be involved this dependent on the dealer’s knowledge and market attributes. Dealers who are successful utilize their knowledge to get a gist of the prevailing market prices so as to make use of the finest approaches in dealing with customers. The motive of this is to increase the level of profit from any potential opportunity. Let us further look, how to become a dealer.

For one to be a skilled dealer there is need to create an attitude of being keen on a multiplicity of items. In view of this, consideration for fine details is paramount. Additionally, the upcoming dealer must show a capability to operate a private business on their own since the way forwards for the career is largely depended on the way an individual manages his or own activities. In order to become a dealer, one also has to be in possession of good buying and selling and an appropriate understanding of the extant market prices. The new dealer also has to cultivate good communication and interpersonal skills in order to augment persuasion and confidence.

In one possesses the necessary skills, it is not necessarily important to have formal experience in dealership transactions. Experience is developed progressively as an individual get mote involved in bargaining a haggling during dealings with clients. The best technique therefore is to identify the key aspects of the market that form the basis of operations. This has to be enhanced by incisive thinking and proper judgment so as to win many clients, most of who are commonly difficult to persuade.

I see a lot of situations where a skilled laborer has begun the process of learning how to become a general contractor but hasn’t yet thought about other more personal steps that need to be taken. More specifically, a lot of these folks are woefully ill-prepared from a social skills standpoint. Being a general contractor is about more than organizing laborers and collecting checks; it’s about dealing with all types of personalities and knowing how to reach people on a personal level so that you can effectively sell.

Many will hear this type of advice and blow it off because they believe that their construction skills are so adept and their business relationships so strong that they don’t need to be a good communicator, but they do so at their own risk. I’ve seen numerous scenarios where a highly skilled general contractor went out of business in less than a year because he or she did not have good people skills. This kind of person has huge hurdles to overcome because they don’t do a good job of selling to prospective clients, and when they do score a project they end up coming across as rude or dismissive, which makes the chance for referrals slim to none. A previous customer is always your most valuable resource when it comes to getting a new contractor lead, so it behooves you to treat those that hire you with kid gloves.

If you’re one of these kinds of people and you still have your mind set on becoming a general contractor or starting your own small construction business then there are a few options available to you. The option I would recommend is that you consider bringing on staff a professional salesperson and/or customer service manager. Of course this route is an added expense but it allows you to hand off these duties to a more qualified person who will probably close more sales and bring you more business than you ever could have pulled off on your own. If you can’t afford a salesman then your only other option is to improve yourself. You’ll have to force yourself to become more outgoing and personable. This is easier said than done and often requires years of practice, but if you’re determined to make it happen then you can do it. In the process you’ll not only enrich your business but you’ll enrich your life in general.

Business management skills is the art of completing the job effectively. Working for a skilled manager makes employees happy and keeps turnover low. Unfortunately, most people don’t have decent management skills. This is through no fault of their own, they were just trained by other managers that had the same faults.

How do you improve business management skills? The most important thing that you can do is to get feedback from others on how you interact with your subordinates. It’s extremely easy to think that you’re doing everything right when no one is going to tell you that you aren’t. You may come to some realizations that you don’t like, but that’s a huge part of the growth process.

The most important thing that a manager can have is the respect of their people. With respect you can make a few bad decisions and still have your team behind you. How do you earn their respect? There’s an old saying, “give away what you want to receive,” that sums that up perfectly. They have to know that you’re willing to go to bat for them during the good and the bad times, and respect will stem from that.

There are certainly things that you can do other than these “soft skills” to improve your performance as a manager, but it all stems from the foundation. Negotiation skills, time management, and efficient delegation are all things that will grow from experience as you spend more time in the role. In order to focus on the “hard skills” you have to first get the soft ones down. Business management skills aren’t born overnight, but with time, practice, and patience they will help you develop into the leader that you want to be.

Business communication skills are imperative to being successful. There certainly have been some great leaders that have had terrible communication skills, but they are few and far between. If you want to succeed, you have to be able to show and tell others that you want to do so. This is why improving business skills is so important.

The best thing about improving communication skills is that it’s fairly easy. We’re talking, listening, and writing all day long so you have plenty of opportunity to practice! Let’s go over a brief rundown of some easy ways to improve business communication.

We spend way more time talking than any of the other communication forms. That’s good for those who do so well, bad for the rest of us! The most important thing about speaking around your business peers is that you know your audience. There are things that we say to friends and family that would get an odd response in the office. I’m not just talking about off-color jokes and not-so-PC phrases. Think about the slang that you use every day, or even saying gonna instead of going to. That might be “cool” with your coworkers, but it probably wouldn’t slide with your boss!

Improving your writing boils down to either learning grammar or getting a great proofreader! Word processors and web browsers now come with spelling and grammar check, but those still don’t catch everything! Also, be sure that you don’t type like you text. Your boss doesn’t want to have to decipher “Gt u tha memo l8ter, k?”!

Listening is where most of us lack. It took me a really long time to realize that listening is more than hearing, it’s understanding. If you’re talking more than listening, you’re missing out on lots of things.

Improving your business communication skills is very important to your success. Spend some time observing how you talk, listen, and write with your colleagues and compare that to how you communicate with your friends. If there isn’t much difference, it may be time to shape up!

Your business skills are what is going to help you stay on your feet during good and bad economic times. Change is guaranteed and you’ll lose jobs, get promotions, or get screwed. The business skill that you have will determine how you respond to each situation. The good news is that it’s never too late to start building your business savvy. This site, The Executive Think Tank, is dedicated to showing you different skills and techniques in bite size pieces so that you can improve your career and your life.

Business skill training doesn’t have to happen in school. I’ve learned the most important things of my life through self study and experience. In my opinion, the problem with college is that you spend four years drilling things into your head that you really don’t use until years later. Wouldn’t it make more sense if you continually improved and learned things as you went? I think so!

There are libraries full of business training books that are all of great help, but usually more than you need. When you’re faced with a situation where you’re unsure of what to do, you should have a book that is your mantra of sorts. This could be a book like “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People” or a similar one, that you can pick up and read when you need it and apply it directly to your situation. If you’re jumping to the new, hot business books you’re only going to end up frustrated when you aren’t getting the results that you want. So learn as you go, but have a “go-to” reference that will be flexible enough to help you out in any situation.

Not everyone is born with the essential business skills, nor do they pick them up in college. Your life and your career is an ongoing adventure that is full of twists and unexpected turns. You have to keep learning and improving or you’ll end up somewhere that you don’t want to be!
