Business Management Skills
Business management skills is the art of completing the job effectively. Working for a skilled manager makes employees happy and keeps turnover low. Unfortunately, most people don’t have decent management skills. This is through no fault of their own, they were just trained by other managers that had the same faults.
How do you improve business management skills? The most important thing that you can do is to get feedback from others on how you interact with your subordinates. It’s extremely easy to think that you’re doing everything right when no one is going to tell you that you aren’t. You may come to some realizations that you don’t like, but that’s a huge part of the growth process.
The most important thing that a manager can have is the respect of their people. With respect you can make a few bad decisions and still have your team behind you. How do you earn their respect? There’s an old saying, “give away what you want to receive,” that sums that up perfectly. They have to know that you’re willing to go to bat for them during the good and the bad times, and respect will stem from that.
There are certainly things that you can do other than these “soft skills” to improve your performance as a manager, but it all stems from the foundation. Negotiation skills, time management, and efficient delegation are all things that will grow from experience as you spend more time in the role. In order to focus on the “hard skills” you have to first get the soft ones down. Business management skills aren’t born overnight, but with time, practice, and patience they will help you develop into the leader that you want to be.
