business1Your business skills are what is going to help you stay on your feet during good and bad economic times. Change is guaranteed and you’ll lose jobs, get promotions, or get screwed. The business skill that you have will determine how you respond to each situation. The good news is that it’s never too late to start building your business savvy. This site, The Executive Think Tank, is dedicated to showing you different skills and techniques in bite size pieces so that you can improve your career and your life.

Business skill training doesn’t have to happen in school. I’ve learned the most important things of my life through self study and experience. In my opinion, the problem with college is that you spend four years drilling things into your head that you really don’t use until years later. Wouldn’t it make more sense if you continually improved and learned things as you went? I think so!

There are libraries full of business training books that are all of great help, but usually more than you need. When you’re faced with a situation where you’re unsure of what to do, you should have a book that is your mantra of sorts. This could be a book like “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People” or a similar one, that you can pick up and read when you need it and apply it directly to your situation. If you’re jumping to the new, hot business books you’re only going to end up frustrated when you aren’t getting the results that you want. So learn as you go, but have a “go-to” reference that will be flexible enough to help you out in any situation.

Not everyone is born with the essential business skills, nor do they pick them up in college. Your life and your career is an ongoing adventure that is full of twists and unexpected turns. You have to keep learning and improving or you’ll end up somewhere that you don’t want to be!
